If you’re learning Human Design, one of the most important things to find in your chart is your Authority (a.k.a Decision-Making Authority). (Generate your free Human Design Chart).
Your Human Design Authority shows you how you’re designed to make decisions. It is one of the most practical parts of the system, because it helps answer a real-life question: How do I know what is right for me?
The good news is that finding your Authority is super simple.
What is Human Design Authority?
Your Authority is the body-based decision-making mechanism designated by the defined (and undefined) centers in your chart. It tells you the most reliable way to make choices in alignment with your specific energy.
There are eight Authorities in total. Some are common; some are rare. Yours is determined by which centers in your chart are defined and how they sit in the Authority hierarchy.
Different people have different Authorities, such as:
- Emotional Authority
- Sacral Authority
- Splenic Authority
- Ego Manifested
- Ego Projected Authority
- Self-Projected Authority
- Mental / Environmental Authority
- Lunar Authority
What you need to find your Authority
To find your Authority, you need:
- your birth date
- your birth time
- your birth location
These three details generate your Human Design chart, which is where your Authority appears. The more accurate your birth time is, the more reliable the chart will be. A small time difference can occasionally shift the Authority, so it’s worth tracking down the official record if you have access to it.
Step 1: Generate your Human Design chart
Use our free Human Design chart generator and enter your birth information. Within seconds, the system will produce your chart along with a summary of your Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, and so much more.
Step 2: Look for the Authority label
Once you get to the chart results page, you’ll see a table to the right of your chart. The label “decision-making authority” will show one of the eight Authorities listed below.
It may say:
- Emotional
- Gut (also called Sacral)
- Survival (also called Splenic)
- Willpower Manifested (also calledEgo Manifested)
- Willpower Projected (also called Ego Projected)
- Self-Projected
- Environmental
- Lunar
That is your Authority.
If you’ve heard there are seven Authorities and you’re noticing eight here, that’s intentional. Most sources collapse Manifested Willpower and Projected Willpower into a single category called “Ego Authority.” We separate them because they have different mechanics.
Step 3: Learn what your Authority means
Finding your Authority is only the beginning.
Once you know the name, the next step is understanding how it works in real life.
For example:
- Emotional Authority means clarity comes with time
- Sacral Authority means your body responds in the moment
- Splenic Authority is instinctive and subtle
- Lunar Authority needs time across a cycle
Once you have located your Authority, the next step is reading what it means in your specific chart. The HD&Me Personalized Report walks through your Authority and how to use it day to day, alongside the rest of your chart.
Why Authority matters so much
A lot of people look at Human Design for self-understanding, but Authority is where things become deeply practical.
Authority can help you with:
- relationships
- timing
- opportunities
- work decisions
- commitments
- boundaries
It gives you a more natural way to make decisions than relying on pressure, mental analysis, or what other people expect of you. For most people, learning to work with their Authority is the most concrete shift Human Design offers.
What if your chart feels confusing?
If your chart looks overwhelming the first time you see it, that’s normal. There’s a lot in there, and you don’t need to understand all of it at once.
A strong beginner foundation comes with understanding your HD High Five, including:
- your Type
- your Strategy
- your Authority
- your True Self Signal
- your Not Self Signal
Those five elements of your design together give you more than enough to start experimenting in real life, and the deeper layers of the chart can be added over time.
If your chart still feels confusing after reading it through, the Foundational Human Design Reading is a 75-minute live session built around your specific questions.
What to do next
Once you find your Authority, the next step is integrating it into your own life through experimentation.
Notice:
- whether your clarity tends to arrive immediately or unfold over time
- whether your body gives you strong signals before your mind speaks
- whether waiting helps, or whether the signal is already there
- where your mind tends to override what your body is telling you
Authority becomes more useful when you begin noticing it in everyday life.
You do not need to master all of Human Design at once. Start with how you are designed to decide. That alone can change a lot.
