If you’re learning Human Design, the Solar Plexus (a.k.a. Emotion Center) is one of the most important Centers to understand because it is connected to emotions, emotional waves, sensitivity, and feeling.

For many people, this Center has a huge impact on relationships, decision-making, and everyday life.

What is the Solar Plexus in Human Design?

The Solar Plexus Center is connected to:

  • emotions
  • feeling
  • emotional waves
  • sensitivity
  • mood
  • emotional awareness

It is the emotional center of the Human Design chart.

Why the Solar Plexus matters

The Solar Plexus matters because it affects how emotions are experienced and processed.

It can help explain:

  • why emotions feel intense
  • why emotional clarity takes time
  • how emotional energy moves
  • why certain relationships feel emotionally charged

For people with Emotional Authority, this Center is especially important.

What is happening to the Solar Plexus right now

The Solar Plexus is the only center in the Human Design body graph carrying two functions at once. It is a Motor Center, supplying emotional energy and the wave that drives mood, desire, and feeling. It is also one of the three Awareness Centers, alongside Ajna and Spleen. Ra Uru Hu taught that this dual role is a transitional state, not a permanent design. The Solar Plexus is in the middle of a mutation that is supposed to retire its motor function and elevate its awareness function into a fully active third channel of knowing for the species.

The technical name for this mutation is the Solar Plexus mutation, and it is what the 2027 global cycle change in Human Design is centrally about. Ra wrote in 2018 that “awareness of spirit is not a concept (ajna) or instinct (spleen), it is an emotion (solar plexus).” That is the canonical framing. The new awareness mode the cycle is supposed to bring online is described as a frequency-based, in-the-body sense of truth that operates differently from rational thought (Ajna) or in-the-now intuitive signal (Spleen), and that has not previously been available to the species as a fully active awareness function.

For most adults alive today, the Solar Plexus still functions primarily as a motor. The wave still runs. Emotional Authority still requires waiting through the wave before deciding. The mutation does not change those mechanics for an individual chart. What it does change, in Ra’s teaching, is the background frequency the species is operating in. The cycle Human Design says we are moving into is supposed to make the awareness function of the Solar Plexus more accessible, more rewarded, and eventually dominant, while the motor function fades over the long arc of the next 411 years.

If you want a deeper walk-through of the cycle change itself, including who predicted it, what is and is not provable about it, and what we are watching for as evidence, our What Is the 2027 Human Design Shift pillar covers that ground in detail.

Defined vs undefined Solar Plexus

If your Solar Plexus is defined, emotional energy tends to move through you in a more consistent wave-like pattern.

If your Solar Plexus is undefined, you may be more sensitive to the emotions of others and more likely to amplify emotional energy in your environment.

Neither is better. They simply work differently.

A defined Solar Plexus

A defined Solar Plexus can feel like:

  • recurring emotional waves
  • strong emotional energy
  • needing time for clarity
  • a consistent emotional process

This does not mean being emotional all the time. It means emotional energy tends to have a steadier pattern in your system.

An undefined Solar Plexus

An undefined Solar Plexus can feel like:

  • absorbing or amplifying other people’s emotions
  • discomfort with emotional conflict
  • trying to avoid emotional tension
  • feeling emotions strongly around certain people

An undefined Solar Plexus is not a flaw. It often brings deep sensitivity and emotional awareness.

For a walkthrough of how the Solar Plexus shows up in your specific chart, including which Centers are defined and undefined for you, the HD&Me Personalized Report covers your Type, Strategy, Authority, and defined and undefined Centers in one document built for your chart.

Emotional waves and timing

One of the most important things about the Solar Plexus is that it is not always about quick clarity.

For many people with defined emotional energy, timing matters. What feels true in one emotional moment may feel different later.

This is one reason emotional decision-making often benefits from waiting.

The Solar Plexus and relationships

The Solar Plexus can affect:

  • conflict
  • connection
  • sensitivity
  • intimacy
  • emotional honesty
  • emotional boundaries

Understanding this Center can make a big difference in how people navigate relationships.

If you want to talk through how the Solar Plexus and your other Centers show up in your day-to-day with a Human Design practitioner, the Foundational Human Design Reading is a 75-minute live session built around your specific questions.

What to do next

If you want to understand your Solar Plexus better, notice:

  • whether it is defined or undefined
  • how emotions move through you
  • whether time changes clarity
  • how you respond to other people’s feelings
  • whether you avoid or absorb emotional intensity

The Solar Plexus becomes much easier to understand when you stop judging emotional experience and start observing how it actually works.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Solar Plexus in Human Design?

The Solar Plexus, also called the Emotion Center, is the part of the Human Design chart connected to emotions, emotional waves, feeling, sensitivity, mood, and emotional awareness. It is the emotional center of the chart and influences how emotions are experienced, processed, and expressed in daily life and relationships.

What is the difference between a defined and an undefined Solar Plexus?

A defined Solar Plexus indicates that emotional energy moves through a person in a more consistent wave-like pattern, with recurring highs, lows, and a steady emotional process over time. An undefined Solar Plexus indicates greater sensitivity to the emotions of others and a tendency to absorb or amplify emotional energy in the environment. Neither is better than the other. They simply work differently.

What is an emotional wave in Human Design?

An emotional wave is the recurring pattern of rising and falling emotional energy that runs through a defined Solar Plexus. The wave moves over time, which means what feels true in one emotional moment can feel different at a higher or lower point in the same wave. This is why emotional clarity in Human Design is described as something that arrives over time, not in a single instant.

Why does Emotional Authority require waiting before making a decision?

Emotional Authority is a decision-making process for people with a defined Solar Plexus, and it relies on the full arc of the emotional wave rather than the feeling of any single moment. Waiting allows a person to check whether a decision still feels correct at different points in the wave, which is what produces real clarity. Quick yes or no answers from the top or bottom of a wave often shift later, which is why timing is built into this Authority.

Does an undefined Solar Plexus mean a person is overly emotional?

No. An undefined Solar Plexus means a person is sensitive to and amplifies the emotions of others, not that they are inherently more emotional themselves. Strong feelings around certain people, discomfort with conflict, or the urge to avoid emotional tension are common signals of an undefined Solar Plexus picking up the room. Recognizing which emotions are absorbed and which are personal is the central skill for working with this configuration.
